The Uprising of a Park

Chicano Park stands out in more ways than one.  Its location (under the Coronado Bridge) and its murals are the most obvious distinctions. But the way the park got started may be the most dramatic thing about it. Whereas most city parks are born of bureaucratic action, Chicano Park began with an act of civil disobedience.

Last year longtime activist and Ocean Beach blogger Frank Gormlie wrote a nice remembrance of those events.  Today, on the park’s 40th birthday, it’s been reposted.  Worth recalling.

  1. Show how long I’ve lived here that I remember the uprising and the start of the park.
