Bountiful Bowls

It’s hardly the biggest charity event in San Diego, but for my money the Empty Bowls fundraiser benefitting the nonprofit Third Avenue Charitable Organization (TACO) is one of the most charming. The third annual one took place Saturday, May 9, once again at La Jolla United Methodist Church, the sun shined, and everyone there seemed to be smiling.

More than 25 local potters donated hundreds of hand-made, signed bowls, which were then filled by soup from local restaurants that included the likes of Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza, Bernini’s, Point Loma Seafood, and others. The idea behind the event is that you pay $20 to choose a bowl and fill it with soup as many times as they like. Then you get to take the bowl home. There’s a selection of bread to go with the soup, and bottled water, but that’s it.  Still, it’s a very high-class soup-kitchen experience.

TACO uses the money to feed the homeless and working poor at Third Avenue and Ash Street downtown — something the organization has been doing for more than 30 years. emptybowls.jpg
